Fecal Matter was a very short-lived punk band from Aberdeen Washignton that only released one demo tape, Illiteracy Will Prevail, which is a rarity sought after by many collectors. The band was formed by Kurt Cobain, who was notable for forming Nirvana, and Dale Crover from the influential-to-grunge band Melvins.

History Edit

In 1985, Aberdeen high school drop-out Kurt Cobain formed one of many "joke bands," this being Fecal Matter. The band was formed by Cobain, Dale Crover, and Greg Hokanson on drums. The group spent months writing new material and covering songs from Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Ramones. Cobain and Crover recorded their demo Illiteracy Will Prevail on a 4-track recorder at Kurt's aunt's house in Burien. Debated to have been recorded etween 1985 and 1986, the demo featured 13 songs. Crover was not impressed with the tape, but Melvins frontman Buzz Osbourne (who later joined the band with former Melvins drummer Mike Dillard) stated there was a "certain magic" in it. This line-up did not last long due to Cobian's frustration in Osbourne for failing to buy a bass amplifier. They played one show on May 3, 1986 in Olympia under the name "Brown Towel." The band broke up the same year.

After the break-up, Cobain continued passing around demo tapes to his friends. One reached his friend Krist Novoselic, who later joined Cobain in forming the band Nirvana.
